Where University City is

University City, sometimes called the University Area or U-City, is an edge city mostly within Charlotte's city limits that surrounds the University of North Carolina at Charlotte campus. It lies southeast of Interstate 85, mainly along University City Boulevard (NC 49) and W.T. Harris Boulevard (NC 24). Interstate 485 and North Tryon Street also pass through the area, and the town of Harrisburg and the city of Concord lie to the east and northeast. Charlotte Motor Speedway and Concord Mills Mall are on the area's outskirts.

The area is managed by University City Partners, one of the City's municipal service districts. It has an estimated population of more than 160,000 within its unofficial borders, which include parts of Charlotte, Concord and Harrisburg.

A corridor built on the Blue Line

The LYNX Blue Line was extended from Uptown to University City in 2019, and development along the corridor followed. As of 2020, the corridor included 338,000 square feet of office space, 200 hotel rooms, 3,200 apartments and an entertainment district anchored by a Topgolf location. In July 2020 Centene Corporation announced a 130-acre, $1 billion East Coast headquarters campus in University City.

The University Research Park, across Interstate 85, is one of the largest research parks in the state. The Truliant Amphitheater and the first IKEA in the Carolinas, which opened in 2009, are also in the area.

Events that suit the area

Hotels, campus facilities and meeting rooms near the research park suit conferences, trainings, banquets and corporate dinners, and the rail line gives out-of-town guests a link to Uptown. The 28262 and 28269 zip codes near the research park and Harris Corners Parkway are home to several planner offices.

Most University City events happen inside venues, where CDOT does not issue a permit. A tent over 800 square feet needs a Charlotte Fire Department permit, and an outdoor stage over 120 square feet for ten or more people needs a Mecklenburg County Code Enforcement permit. Use the tents guide to plan the paperwork.
